Bookstore in Ioannina

Location: Ioannina, Greece

Area: 100 m

Proposal: 2013

The bookstore is located in the center of Ioannina on a busy pedestrian street.

The store has been designed to create a modern interactive environment with an alternative exhibition of books and a large open space which the customer can actually use. The wide open window in conjunction with the interactive space inside the bookstore expands the road and store limits in an effort to attract the passenger in the "game" of reading.

The synthetic idea is based on the use of the wooden pallet, as the basic material in an effort to create a more "relaxing" space that can be easily modified and mutated in order to work as a store, as an exhibition space and as a setting for multiple events. The book shelves made of pallets operate simultaneously as a shop window, sitting and reading area.

The "game" of architectural composition is reinforced by other elements such as the creation of inclined wells with concrete blocks into which additional shelves are created, the use of wooden pallets to illuminate the ceiling, decoration with old posters book fairs etc, calling thus the client-reader to enjoy a book.

The materials selected declare both the possibility and the need to create a space which will be consistent with the aesthetic and economic conditions of the customer. The synthetic idea itself can meet the requirements of today and invent ideas with low cost ecological constructions while retaining the aesthetic interest at a high level.
